HISTORY OF OUR PROGRAM

We were motivated to initiate this program when racial tension between Hispanics and Anglos escalated at Truckee High School . Truckee is situated in the Sierra between Sacramento , South Shore Lake Tahoe and Reno . These cities have been experiencing increasing amount of gang violence and warfare. About 10 years ago , some our students began to imitate the gangs that were being depicted in the movies. Racial problems arose immediately. Students began wearing colors , forming gangs and fighting. At this point , we made two commitments: 1) that every racial incident would be dealt with in a counseling environment with parental involvement , and 2) that we would begin a proactive approach using intercultural and intercurricular programs.

Barbara , The ESL teacher and Karen , the spanish teacher met to design a plan of combining classes on a weekly basis. They utilize cooperative learning techniques along with live-event learning philosophies to involve the students in whole language interchange. Activities include interviews , debates , games ,holiday celebrations , dances and many other projects . The commonality of these activities is that they are students-centered with an emphasis on application of language and culture rrather than memorization and rote.
